In the water supply and drainage renovation project of a large chemical park in Singapore, the total pipeline length is nearly 800 meters, and the pipeline is equipped with large circulating water pumps. During the preliminary design phase, engineers identified two major challenges: continuous vibration caused by pump start-stop, and pipeline thermal expansion and contraction induced by temperature variation of the medium. Direct rigid connection would easily lead to loose flanges, water seepage and weld cracking after long-term operation.
Carbon steel flange rubber expansion joints were finally selected as flexible compensation components for the pipeline. They were installed at pump inlets and outlets, pipeline corners and segmented positions of long straight pipelines in accordance with the pipeline layout. During installation, flange concentricity was strictly guaranteed, bolts were tightened evenly in diagonal sequence, and the rubber body was not forcibly stretched or twisted.
Remarkable results have been achieved after commissioning:
1. Effectively absorb axial and lateral displacement generated by pipeline thermal expansion and contraction to release pipeline stress;
2. Block vibration transmission from water pumps, significantly reduce noise in the pump room and prevent vibration from spreading along the entire pipeline;
3. The flexible sealing structure buffers stress on joints and eliminates frequent leakage.
This Singapore chemical project has been operating stably to date. No loosening or water leakage has occurred at pipeline connections, greatly reducing on-site inspection and maintenance workload. It fully demonstrates the excellent performance of rubber expansion joints for vibration damping and displacement compensation in overseas chemical and water supply & drainage pipelines. Specifications of rubber expansion joints can be precisely selected according to working conditions including pressure, medium, pipe diameter and compensation requirement, to provide customized solutions for various industrial pipeline projects at home and abroad.
